CHEM 101 builds the quantum-mechanical and thermodynamic vocabulary you'll need to reason about why matter behaves the way it does, moving from atomic structure and bonding up through equilibrium, kinetics, and electrochemistry. Expect weekly problem sets working through Petrucci, two midterms plus a final, and a mandatory lab where you actually run the experiments behind the theory. It's a required first-semester course for most science and engineering tracks at Bilkent, and the bonding, thermo, and equilibrium ideas here are the foundation everything from CHEM 102 to materials, biology, and chemical engineering courses will assume you already own.

Usage of GenAi tools or other LLM tools are allowed in this course. However, students are expected to use such tools as learning boosters rather than copy-paste capabilities. Use of Ai tools in exams and quizes are not allowed. Attendance to all labs Total of the Midterm 1 Score (out of 100 Points) + Midterm 2 Score (Out for 100 Points) > 100 Points (i.e., average of midterm scores > 100 Points) Repeating students with a lab grade of >= 70%: most recent lab grade will be automatically transferred to the current
