Cross Cultural Negotiations

This course treats interpreting as more than language transfer: it trains you to read the cultural, political, and power dynamics that shape what people actually mean when they sit across a negotiating table. You'll work through case studies from international organizations and the media, dissect how different cultures frame the same issue, give oral presentations, and put it all together in mock conferences that stand in for the midterm and final. It's a bridge between your core interpreting skills and the diplomatic and conference settings where you'll eventually work, where misreading register or etiquette can derail a negotiation faster than a mistranslated word.

Hafta 1
Brief description of the aim of the course; Discussion of syllabus; Brief explanation about how the course will serve to train the students as interpreters; Explanation of what is expected from the students, what the instructors responsibilities are, how they should prepare for the course.
Hafta 2
Dealing with the concepts of cross cultural interaction, communication, negotiation; Lecture about the scope, aim, and necessity of grounding in the concepts of cross cultural interaction, communication and negotiation. The central questions are: Why study communication? Can negotiation techniques and know how of communication and negotiation concepts and processes and procedures be applied to interpreting practice? What should such an approach include? Discussions about the nature of cross cultural communication, negotiation etc.
Hafta 3
Platforms for cross cultural interaction; Case studies in different discourse contexts; platforms for cross cultural interaction, international organizations, multinational firms, supranational platforms etc.; Analysis of different points of view of different cultures on similar issues: attentive listening, discourse analysis, anticipation, stereotyping (advantages and pitfalls), understanding text discourses, following logical and linguistic links etc.; Study of classical examples from the printed press and the audio-visual media (i.e: how Turkish channels and foreign channels deal with the issue of the day, how different channels of the same culture deal with the issue. Understanding local vs. global ‘politics’)

Understanding, critically analyzing situational, social, financial, political concerns governing negotiation and interaction; Dealing with texts and authors on diverse issues: -Clash of ideas vs. clash of ideals -Thinking in terms of the speaker -Text, logic and analytical analysis of discourse -Grounding in terminology -Research procedures for better understanding, level of comprehension
