Algebra I

Graduate-level algebra that rebuilds the group/ring/module machinery you saw as an undergrad on a more rigorous footing, with categorical language tying the pieces together and Galois theory as the eventual payoff. Expect weekly problem sets that lean heavily on proofs, Sylow arguments, factorization in PIDs and UFDs, Eisenstein-style irreducibility, and serious use of Zorn's Lemma, out of Dummit and Foote, plus two midterms and a final. It's the standard first-semester gateway for the math MS/PhD track and the prerequisite for MATH 524 and most of the algebra-flavored electives that follow.
