Graduate-level algebra that rebuilds the group/ring/module machinery you saw as an undergrad on a more rigorous footing, with categorical language tying the pieces together and Galois theory as the eventual payoff. Expect weekly problem sets that lean heavily on proofs — Sylow arguments, factorization in PIDs and UFDs, Eisenstein-style irreducibility, and serious use of Zorn's Lemma — out of Dummit and Foote, plus two midterms and a final. It's the standard first-semester gateway for the math MS/PhD track and the prerequisite for MATH 524 and most of the algebra-flavored electives that follow.
