Translation Studies I

Translation isn't just swapping words between languages — it's a centuries-old argument about meaning, fidelity, and culture, and this course is your first serious tour of how thinkers from Cicero to Toury have framed that argument. You'll work through Munday's textbook chapter by chapter, write short homework responses tying theory to actual translation choices, give a presentation, and sit a midterm and final that expect you to compare frameworks rather than just name them. As the theoretical anchor of the TRIN sequence, it gives you the vocabulary — equivalence, skopos, norms, shifts — you'll lean on in every later translation, interpreting, and thesis course.
