Sight Translation II

Sight Translation II builds on the core skill of reading a written text in one language while delivering it orally in another, this time with politics and law as the substantive arena and with growing emphasis on working into your B language rather than just your mother tongue. You will spend most of the semester in lab-style practice sessions, decoding meaning units on the fly, paraphrasing and restructuring under time pressure, and refining pitch, volume, and delivery, with two midterms and three quizzes assessing strategy use and performance. Coming off the first sight translation course, it sits at the hinge between written translation and full conferencing interpreting, since the techniques you drill here, salami slicing, summation, communicative restructuring, are the same reflexes you will lean on in consecutive and simultaneous work later in the program.
