Translation of Legal Texts

Legal translation is less about swapping words than about reproducing legal effect across two systems that don't carve up the world the same way, and this course trains you to recognize where Turkish and the other working language genuinely diverge in doctrine, register, and authority. Most of the term is hands-on rendering of real instruments — statutes, treaties, ECtHR judgments, bilateral contracts, UN resolutions — building specialized terminology as you move through hierarchy of norms, separation of powers, and the Turkish legal system before tackling international courts. By the time you reach the second half, you should be comfortable handling the kind of equivalence problems that come up in agency work, which feeds directly into upper-year specialized translation electives and any future work in legal or institutional settings.
