Victorian Literature

Victorian literature is where you watch a society argue with itself in print — over industrial poverty, the "Woman Question," empire, faith eroding under Darwin, and what counts as art once decadence enters the room. You read across genres (Gaskell, the Brownings, Rossetti, Wilde, Wells) and weave the prose, poetry, and polemic into a single historical conversation, with a term project and seat-of-the-pants discussion carrying most of the grade. Coming after the Romantics sequence, it gives you the nineteenth-century grounding the modernism and literary theory courses later assume you already have.
