HIST 413

Byzantine History I: 324-1025

Byzantium is the story of how the Roman Empire didn't actually fall — it relocated east, reinvented itself around a Christian capital, and ran for another thousand years. This first half traces that reinvention from Constantine's founding of Constantinople through Justinian's reconquest dream and into the Macedonian recovery around 1025, with most of your time spent reading primary sources (Eusebius, Prokopios, saints' lives, the Paschal Chronicle) and arguing about them in essays, a presentation, and weekly discussion. It's the prerequisite mindset for HIST 414 and anything Ottoman or medieval Mediterranean afterward — you can't read what came next without knowing the empire it inherited from.
