HIST 442

A History of the Modern Middle East :1800 to Present

HIST 442 traces how the Middle East went from late-Ottoman provinces and Qajar Iran to the nation-states, ideologies, and unresolved conflicts you read about in the news today, treating "modernization," colonialism, and nationalism as contested processes rather than inevitable outcomes. You'll read Cleveland alongside primary documents (the Hatt-i Şerif, Husayn-McMahon, Sèvres) and memoir-style works like Orga and Farman Farmaian, and the grade hinges on showing up prepared to discuss them plus a research paper synthesizing primary and secondary sources. It's the historical backbone for anything you'll later take on Turkish politics, IR of the region, or Ottoman studies — without it, contemporary debates feel like they start mid-sentence.
