Conflict is inevitable in politics, but the way parties talk through it shapes whether disputes escalate or resolve — this course treats negotiation and mediation as skills you can actually learn, grounded in bargaining theory, psychology, and the role of culture, power, and third parties. You'll spend much of the semester in simulations and role plays (Prisoner's Dilemma, Texoil, a Northern Ireland parade dispute, a full mediation exercise) alongside case studies of real negotiations over the Turkish Constitution, Cyprus, and Jerusalem, with assessment built around a case study, field-work report, presentation, and final essay. It's a natural complement to IR's conflict and diplomacy track, and the applied side matters whether you head into foreign service, law, or any career where getting people to "yes" is the actual job.
