East Asia is too often read through a Western IR lens, and this course pushes back by asking how the region's own states and orders evolved on their own terms, starting roughly from the Song period and tracing forward to the present. You'll work through historical case material and theoretical readings, then connect those to how East Asia shapes and is shaped by shifts in the global order. It pairs well with the department's IR theory and history sequence, giving you a regional anchor for thinking about power transitions and non-Western statecraft.
