Singing in a language you don't speak fluently is mostly a problem of sound, not meaning — this course gives you a precise tool, the IPA, to nail down exactly which vowels and consonants land on each note in Italian and English repertoire. You'll spend the semester transcribing arias and art songs phonetically, drilling tricky distinctions like open vs. closed [e]/[ɛ] and [o]/[ɔ], handling phrasal doubling and diphthong syllabification, and bringing it back to actual recitation and performance. It's foundational for any voice major heading into studio work, opera scenes, or further diction courses in German and French, where the same transcription habits become the difference between intelligible singing and vowel soup.
