A survey of the German Lied and French mélodie traditions, taught as a chronological tour from Mozart and Schubert through Wolf, Fauré, Debussy, and Poulenc, with the goal of building both ears and bibliography for art song as a distinct form. You'll listen, analyze poetry-music relationships, and track each composer's stylistic fingerprint across roughly 14 weeks, with a midterm, final, weekly homework, and a project that asks you to dig into a slice of repertoire yourself. Think of it as the repertoire-and-context companion to your studio voice lessons: the course that turns a singer who can perform a Schubert song into one who knows where it sits in the language.
