PHIL 418 sits at the intersection of philosophy and the empirical sciences of mind, asking what cognitive science actually tells us about thinking, perceiving, remembering, and being conscious — and where its core concepts (modularity, innateness, the extended mind, theory of mind) hold up or break down under scrutiny. You'll work primarily through close readings of influential texts in the Frankish & Ramsey handbook, producing roughly thirteen short response papers plus a longer term essay, with in-class discussion driving the interpretive work. It complements the more technical cognitive science offerings by training you to evaluate the arguments and empirical claims behind them, which matters if you plan to do serious work in philosophy of mind, AI, or psychology rather than just consume their results.
