POLS 490 treats democracy, development, and human rights as three deeply entangled outcomes and asks how well comparative politics actually explains the links between them—whether richer countries really democratize, whether democracies deliver rights, and where resource wealth, institutions, or globalization break the pattern. You'll read original research articles rather than a textbook, debate competing theories and their measurements in class, sit two essay exams, and write a paper that defends a causal argument with evidence. As a senior elective it pulls together the comparative politics sequence and pushes you toward graduate-style critical reading, with regional cases from Latin America to the Middle East keeping the theory honest.
