A graduate seminar that treats Turkey not as a unique case but as one data point among many, using comparative frameworks to interrogate how state and society have negotiated power across questions of religion, citizenship, gender, parties, and civil society. You'll work through weekly readings with response papers, build toward a term paper from an early proposal, and present your own research-in-progress rather than sit through standard exams. The payoff is methodological as much as substantive: you leave able to situate Turkish political phenomena within broader theoretical debates, which is the move expected of any serious researcher in the field.
