Gender and Media

Gender and Media treats representation as a political act: the course asks how film, television, advertising, and digital platforms construct masculinity, femininity, and desire, and how those constructions either reinforce or unsettle existing power relations. You'll read foundational feminist theory (Beauvoir, Butler, Mulvey, hooks, Haraway) alongside weekly screenings, then practice close readings of media texts through those lenses in discussion and written analysis. It sits at the upper end of the COMD curriculum as a critical-theory companion to the production and media-studies sequence, giving you the vocabulary to argue about why representation matters before you graduate into making it yourself.
