Adaptation in Media

Adaptation in Media treats the movement of stories across forms—novel to film, comic to series, game to franchise—as its own object of study, asking what changes when a text crosses mediums and cultures rather than whether the new version is "faithful" to the old. Most of the semester is spent close-reading case studies (Watchmen across its 1987, 2009, and 2019 incarnations is the anchor) and building toward a term project, with grades resting on that project, an oral presentation, and consistent participation. It sits on the theory-and-criticism side of COMD rather than production, and the analytical vocabulary you pick up here—medium specificity, appropriation, transmedia logic—is what makes later franchise, fandom, and media-industry courses legible.
