A close-reading seminar built around two Austen novels—*Pride and Prejudice* and *Persuasion*—where the real work is learning to see how form (free indirect discourse, the marriage plot, narrative irony) does ideological labor around property, class, gender, and the liberal subject. You'll do a presentation, a short essay, and take-home midterm and final exams, with class time spent discussing the novels alongside historicist and feminist criticism and the occasional screen adaptation. It functions as a focused single-author elective for ELIT students, the kind of course where you stop reading Austen as costume drama and start engaging her as a site of serious critical debate.
