Melancholy isn't a fixed diagnosis but a shifting figure that Western writers keep returning to, and this course tracks how that feeling gets reimagined from Aristotle's Problemata through Burton, Shakespeare, Defoe, Sterne, and the Romantics up to Keats. You'll do close readings of philosophy, theory, and literature side by side, working out arguments in two midterm essays, two short writing assignments, and a final essay rather than answering exam questions. As an upper-level ELIT seminar, it assumes you can already handle a primary text on its own terms and pushes you toward the kind of historically-aware critical writing that the department's capstone work and graduate study expect.
