International Law

International law treats the rules states actually follow (and break) as a real legal order, not just polite suggestions, so the course is really about learning to think like a lawyer about things like sovereignty, treaties, and state responsibility instead of arguing them as pure politics. You'll work mostly through Evans and Shaw chapter by chapter, with a midterm and final that expect you to reason from sources and cases rather than recite definitions. It's the foundational half of a two-semester sequence (IR 304 picks up the substantive regimes) and underpins basically every upper-level IR elective on security, human rights, or global governance.
