LAW 102

Roman Law

Roman Law is really a first exposure to thinking like a lawyer: you learn to read jurists' arguments, dissect cases, and trace why modern civil codes still draw on categories the Romans hammered out two thousand years ago. The work is reading-heavy — short exegeses of source texts, in-class debates, and two written exams (midterm and final essays) where you defend positions in proper legal language rather than recite topics. Sitting alongside LAW 101 in your first semester, it builds the conceptual vocabulary (persons, property, obligations) that almost every later private-law course at the Faculty quietly assumes you already own.
