MBG 617 is a research immersion course: instead of following a fixed syllabus, you spend half the semester embedded in one faculty member's lab, contributing to whatever advanced molecular biology or genetics project is actively running there. The work is hands-on bench science — running experiments, reading the relevant literature, presenting your progress, and writing it up — assessed largely through a lab exam and your day-to-day performance in the group. It's a bridge between coursework-style technique training and genuine thesis research, so the value depends heavily on which group you join and how seriously you treat the rotation.
