Philosophy of Religion

Philosophy of Religion asks whether belief in God can withstand rigorous philosophical scrutiny, working through the classical arguments for God's existence alongside the puzzles that have historically pushed back against them: evil, hiddenness, foreknowledge, and the rationality of faith itself. You'll spend the semester reading dense primary texts from the Meister anthology and producing three essays that reconstruct arguments and defend your own position, with class discussion carrying real weight. As a graduate-level seminar, it assumes you can already handle analytic argumentation and pushes you toward the kind of careful, charitable engagement that metaphysics and ethics of belief demand at the research level.
