Freshman Project

PHYS 124 drops you into real research from day one: you pick a small physics question, pair up with a faculty supervisor, and actually carry out a project rather than sitting through lectures about how science works. The bulk of your time goes into literature search, planning a controlled experiment or theoretical investigation, managing your own timeline, and producing a proper scientific report and presentation at the end. It's a low-stakes first taste of the research culture you'll see again in upper-year labs and senior projects, and the writing and bibliographic skills you build here carry over to essentially every science course that follows.
