Regional Security in the Middle East

Middle East security isn't a fixed map of threats — it's a contested set of *visions* (Arab, Mediterranean, Muslim, Eurocentric) that different actors have used to define what the region even is and whose security counts. You'll work through these competing framings chronologically, from Sykes-Picot through the Cold War, Oslo, 9/11, the Arab uprisings and ISIS, writing weekly response papers and a research essay built around a proposal you defend in class. As a graduate seminar leaning on Pınar Bilgin's contrapuntal approach, it's less about memorizing crises than learning to ask whose perspective a given "regional security" claim is smuggling in.
