POLS 601

Seminar in Turkish Politics

POLS 601 is a doctoral-level deep dive into how Turkey actually works politically — tracing the Ottoman-Republican continuities, center-periphery tensions, and the recurring frictions between secularism, Islam, nationalism, and military tutelage that keep destabilizing Turkish democracy. Expect heavy reading of primary scholarship (Heper-era classics included), seminar-style discussion, and a substantial research paper where you stake out an original argument rather than summarize debates. It's the foundational field course for the PhD program — the conceptual vocabulary you build here is what later comparative-politics and Turkish-politics seminars assume you already speak.
