Statistical thermodynamics is where you stop taking macroscopic quantities like entropy and free energy on faith and start deriving them from the underlying microstates — the bridge between the abstract postulates of classical thermodynamics and the partition functions that actually let you compute things for real molecules. You'll work through ensemble theory (microcanonical, canonical, grand canonical) and then apply it to concrete systems: Einstein crystals, paramagnets, ideal gases, ortho-para hydrogen, adsorption and polymer models, with assessment driven by problem-heavy homework, quizzes, and written exams from McQuarrie and Hill. It's a graduate-level foundation that makes physical chemistry, kinetics, and any future work in soft matter or molecular simulation actually make sense rather than feel like memorized formulas.
