CHEM 493 is where you stop being a student following lab manuals and become a researcher running your own scientific question — you pick a problem in chemistry, propose it, and actually investigate it (experimentally, computationally, or both) under a faculty advisor. The semester is structured around the full research arc: literature search, workflow design, data collection and error analysis, then a written report and a presentation defending what you found. It sits at the end of the BS chemistry curriculum as the integrative checkpoint, forcing you to pull together everything from p-chem, organic, analytical, and inorganic into one coherent investigation, and it's the closest preview you'll get to graduate-level research before you actually apply.

Usage of GenAi tools or other LLM tools are allowed in this course. However, students are expected to use such tools as learning boosters rather than copy-paste capabilities. Blunt use of Ai tools in other credit bearing components of the course (reports, presentations, etc.) such as direct copy/paste, no significant contribution by the student to the Ai generated material or use of Ai material without paraphrasing are considered unethical academic conduct and subject to disciplinary penalties.
