This is a graduate-level deep dive into how d- and f-block metal complexes actually behave: why they absorb the colors they do, how ligands swap in and out, and what makes organometallic species reactive enough to drive catalysis. You'll work through electronic spectra, substitution mechanisms in square planar and octahedral systems, the 18-electron and Wade's rules, and oxidative addition pathways, mostly via problem sets and a midterm-heavy assessment built around Housecroft & Sharpe. It builds directly on undergraduate inorganic and group theory, and gives you the mechanistic vocabulary you'll need before tackling homogeneous catalysis, cluster chemistry, or any organometallics-driven research.
