CHEM 586

Electrochemistry

Electrochemistry here is treated as the physical chemistry of charge transfer across an interface — what happens thermodynamically and kinetically when electrons cross between an electrode and a solution, and how the double-layer structure shapes that exchange. You'll work through Bard & Faulkner, learning to read voltammograms and impedance spectra well enough to design and interpret experiments using potential-step, sweep, and controlled-current methods, with homework and a presentation tying the theory to real measurements. The payoff is the back half of the course, where the same Faradaic/non-Faradaic distinction explains why supercapacitors, batteries, and dye-sensitized solar cells behave the way they do — making this the natural bridge between physical chemistry coursework and any research group doing energy storage or surface science.
