Fundamentals of Computer Networks

Networks are about getting bits from one machine to another reliably across messy, heterogeneous infrastructure, and this course teaches you the layered abstraction (OSI/TCP/IP) that makes that tractable — what each layer promises, what protocol does the work, and where the boundaries actually leak. You'll spend the semester inside Cisco's CCNA 1 curriculum: configuring IOS on switches and routers, subnetting IPv4 by hand, working with IPv6, and verifying connectivity with the same tools network engineers use, capped by the online CCNA 1 final alongside the course final. As a sophomore CTIS requirement it's the prerequisite mental model for everything later that assumes "the network just works" — server admin, security, distributed systems — and the subnetting and packet-tracing fluency you build here is what those courses quietly rely on.

Course Preview. Cisco Networking Academy Web Site Demo. Ch.1 – Networking Today: Where, when and how do we use networks. Elements of a network.
Hafta 2
Ch.1 – Describe the four basic requirements of a reliable network. The architecture of the Internet. Trends in networking Ch.3 – Protocols and Models: The Platform for Communications. LANs. WANs, Internetworks. Protocols. Layered Models (TCP/IP, OSI). Explain how data encapsulation allows data to be transported across the network. Explain how local hosts access local resources on a network.

Ch.4 – Physical Layer: Describe the purpose and functions of the physical layer in the network. Physical media copper, UTP, fiber, wireless. Connect devices using wired and wireless media. Ch.2 – Basic Switch and End Device Configuring: Explain how to access a Cisco IOS device for configuration purposes. Configure a Cisco IOS device using CLI. Configure a host device with an IP address. Verify connectivity between two end devices.

Ch.5 – Number Systems: Calculate numbers between decimal and binary systems. Calculate numbers between decimal and hexadecimal systems.

Ch.6 – Data Link Layer: Purpose of the Data Link Layer, Topologies, Data Link Frame. Ethernet frames.

Ch.7 – Ethernet Switching: Ethernet sublayers, Ethernet MAC address, Switch forwarding methods and port settings available on Layer 2 switch ports.

Ch.10 – Basic Router Configuration: Configure initial settings on an IOS Cisco router. Ch.8 - Network Layer: Characteristics. IPv4 Packet. Limitations of IPv4. IPv6 Overview. IPv6 Packet. How a host routes. Router Routing Tables

Ch.9 – Address Resolution Layer: Compare the roles of the MAC address and the IP address. Describe the purpose of ARP. (Address Resolution Protocol). Ch.11 – IPv4 Addressing: Describe the structure of an IPv4 address including the network portion, the host portion, and the subnet mask.

Ch.11 – Compare the characteristics and uses of the unicast, broadcast and multicast IPv4 addresses. IPv4 Addressing: Explain public, private, and reserved IPv4 addresses. Implement a VLSM addressing scheme.

Ch.12 – IPv6 Addressing: Explain the need for IPv6 addressing. Explain how IPv6 addresses are represented. Compare types of IPv6 network addresses.

Ch.12 – Explain how to configure static global unicast and link-local IPv6 network addresses. Explain how to configure global unicast addresses dynamically. Configure link-local addresses dynamically. Ch.13 - ICMP: Explain how ICMP is used to test network connectivity. Use ping and traceroute utilities to test network connectivity.

Moreover, instructor does not recommend using these tools for better understanding of subjects discussed during lectures, since they often generate incorrect information. Instead use Cisco Online Lecture Notes and office hours.

A student who will fail to collect a total of 20/100 points from the weighted average of the midterm exams, one assignment, quizzes AND attend less than 70% of all the lectures will get FZ grade i.e., he/she will not be permitted to take the final exam and must repeat the course.
