Despite the catalog title, this is really a math-methods course for macroeconomists: you learn the tools — calculus of variations, optimal control (Pontryagin), dynamic programming, and the phase-plane analysis of ODE systems — and then turn them on growth theory, working from the Solow neoclassical model through transitional dynamics to endogenous growth. Work is theory-heavy: a homework set, written midterm and final, plus a paper proposal where you frame your own growth question. It's the bridge between intermediate macro and graduate-style modeling, so anything you do later in growth, business cycles, or quantitative macro will lean on the optimization and stability techniques built here.
