The third semester of medieval Latin moves you past textbook exercises into the actual documentary record—charters, monastic chronicles, registers, treaties—the raw material historians of medieval and early modern Europe work from. Most weeks are translation sessions where you and the instructor jointly chip away at chosen texts, with your grade riding on two special assignments, four presentations, and a final essay. Coming after the first two Latin courses, this is where grammar drills give way to genuine paleographic and philological judgment, equipping you to read primary sources directly rather than through someone else's English edition.
