HIST 579

Modernization of the Ottoman Empire:1800-1923

HIST 579 takes the long nineteenth century as a case study in how a sprawling, multi-ethnic empire tried to reinvent itself under external pressure and internal strain, from Tanzimat reforms through Abdülhamid II's centralization to the Young Turk era. You'll work through the major historiographical debates — was Ottoman modernization a derivative European import or its own distinct trajectory? — by reading primary sources and secondary literature, then producing an original research essay. It's a graduate seminar that assumes you already know the basic Ottoman narrative; the payoff is learning to argue with the field rather than just summarize it, which sets you up for thesis work on late Ottoman or early Republican topics.
