A graduate seminar on the crusader state that held a sliver of Palestine for nearly two centuries, treated less as a chronicle of battles than as a case study in how a transplanted Latin society negotiated coexistence and conflict with Muslim, Byzantine, Eastern Christian, Jewish, and eventually Mongol neighbors. You'll work through Prawer alongside instructor-supplied readings and primary sources, deliver presentations, and write an original research essay rather than sit traditional exams. Useful background for medieval Mediterranean, Byzantine, or early Islamic history work, and a good entry point into debates about colonialism, frontier societies, and cross-cultural contact in the premodern world.
