HUM 111 is a seminar built around the idea that the foundational texts of the ancient Near East and Mediterranean are still doing real work, shaping how we argue, narrate, and define what counts as a good life, and it asks you to engage them as live interlocutors rather than museum pieces. You'll read Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Theban plays, and the Republic closely, write essays, sit reading quizzes, and build toward a course project, with class time spent in actual discussion rather than lecture. As a required core course, it pairs with HUM 112 to give every Bilkent undergraduate a shared grounding in interpretive and critical reasoning that pays off in any later humanities or social-science work you do.
