HUM 113

Democracy and Empire in the Ancient World

HUM 113 traces how Greeks and Romans actually built, argued over, and lost their political systems, moving from Athenian assemblies through the Roman Republic's collapse into Augustan empire. You'll read primary sources weekly (Thucydides, Cicero, Tacitus, plus a field trip to the Res Gestae in Ankara), write four essays, and defend interpretations in class rather than just memorize dates. It's a humanities core elective, but the real payoff is learning to read ancient political arguments closely enough to recognize when modern ones are recycling them.
