The second half of Bilkent's year-long humanities sequence, picking up where HUM 111 left off and tracing how the modern Western mind got built, through Machiavelli's politics, Descartes' doubt, Kant's Enlightenment, and Shelley's monster. You'll read primary texts closely rather than summaries, sit in seminar-style discussions, take reading quizzes to keep you honest, and write a substantial project plus a final essay exam. It's the course where you stop memorizing "what philosophers said" and start arguing with them on the page, which is the kind of reading and writing every later humanities-flavored elective at Bilkent assumes you can already do.
