IR 205 traces how the modern state system actually came together, walking from Westphalia in 1648 through the long nineteenth century up to the collapse that produced World War I. You read Kissinger's Diplomacy alongside lectures and seminar discussion, and you're assessed mainly through a quiz, a midterm, and a final that test whether you can connect events rather than just date them. It's the historical backbone for the rest of the IR curriculum: concepts like balance of power, hegemony, and the concert system get introduced here so that later theory and contemporary politics courses have something concrete to argue about.
