The Middle East gets treated in headlines as a permanent crisis zone, and this course pushes back by giving you the historical and conceptual tools to see why the region looks the way it does — from the Ottoman collapse and the Sykes-Picot carve-up through the Arab-Israeli wars, the oil economies, the 1979 Iranian revolution, and the Arab Spring. You'll read across IR theory and regional history, write on specific episodes via homeworks and a quiz, and sit a midterm and final that test whether you can argue with evidence rather than vibes. It pairs naturally with the department's IR theory sequence and is the usual on-ramp before more specialized electives on Turkish foreign policy, political Islam, or Gulf security.
