The Middle East gets treated in headlines as a permanent crisis zone, and this course pushes back by giving you the historical and conceptual tools to see why the region looks the way it does, from the Ottoman collapse and the Sykes-Picot carve-up through the Arab-Israeli wars, the oil economies, the 1979 Iranian revolution, and the Arab Spring. You'll read across IR theory and regional history, write on specific episodes via homeworks and a quiz, and sit a midterm and final that test whether you can argue with evidence rather than vibes. It pairs naturally with the department's IR theory sequence and is the usual on-ramp before more specialized electives on Turkish foreign policy, political Islam, or Gulf security.
