Gender in International Relations

This course treats gender not as a side topic in IR but as a lens that reshapes how you read war, security, political economy, development, and human rights, the assumption being that "neutral" categories in mainstream IR theory often hide gendered structures worth interrogating. Expect a seminar rhythm: weekly readings (Runyan's Global Gender Politics anchors it), in-class essay quizzes, a midterm and final, and consistent discussion prep where you're expected to argue a position rather than summarize. It pairs naturally with IR theory courses and works best after you've seen the realist/liberal canon, since much of the work here is reading those traditions against the grain.
