Functional analysis is where linear algebra and real analysis fuse into a single language for infinite-dimensional spaces — the natural setting once your "vectors" become functions, sequences, or solutions to PDEs. You'll spend the semester proving things about normed and Hilbert spaces and their bounded operators, working through weekly homework and quizzes alongside the four cornerstone theorems (Hahn-Banach, uniform boundedness, open mapping, closed graph) that justify essentially every later move in analysis. Coming after MATH 251/252-level real analysis, it's the gateway course for anyone heading toward operator theory, PDEs, quantum mechanics, or graduate analysis, and the place where abstract proof-writing stops being optional.
