Composition IV

The fourth composition studio pushes you from solo and small-ensemble writing into sustained work for chamber forces of five or more, where balance, idiomatic instrumental writing, and structural coherence over ten-plus minutes become the real challenge. Most of the term is spent building a single substantial piece, with weekly sessions alternating between repertoire study (especially post-1945 composers), advanced polyphonic technique, and one-on-one work on your draft, culminating in a defended jury where you justify intellectual approach, orchestration, and form. It's the capstone of the four-semester composition sequence, the point at which the craft you've accumulated has to hold up at ensemble scale and stand on its own as a finished score.
