Advanced Orchestration II

Where Advanced Orchestration I trains you in the standard 19th-century palette, this sequel pushes into the 20th and 21st century: extended instrumental techniques, parametric notation, and computer-assisted orchestration with tools like Orchidea, OpenMusic, and Max. You'll spend the semester on six homeworks and two larger projects that ask you to translate non-musical sound — speech, animal calls, natural acoustic phenomena, industrial noise, synthetic textures — into idiomatic writing for medium-to-large ensembles. The point is to expand what "orchestration" means once timbre itself becomes a compositional parameter, which sets up the kind of score-craft expected in upper-level composition and the senior project.
