Theory IV: Classical Form

Theory IV is where the analytical machinery you've built up finally meets real repertoire: you learn to hear a Haydn sentence, a Mozart period, or a Beethoven sonata exposition as a system of formal functions rather than a string of chords. The work splits between Caplin-style harmonic and formal analysis of classical instrumental music, species and free/imitative counterpoint exercises in the Jeppesen tradition, and ongoing ear-training, all assessed through two open-book exams. It closes the core theory sequence by tying counterpoint, harmony, and form together, and it's the foundation you'll lean on whenever you analyze, arrange, or compose tonal music later in the program.
