Citizenship is the lens here: how the relationship between state and individual gets defined, contested, and rewritten, and what that has specifically meant in Turkey from the late Ottoman period through today. The first half grounds you in the theoretical literature (Marshall, Brubaker, the liberal/communitarian/republican debates, plus newer challenges like post-national and constitutional citizenship), and the second half applies that vocabulary to the Turkish case across distinct political periods, using documentaries on episodes like the population exchange and the September 6-7 events as primary material. Assessment leans on a midterm, a final, and two in-class essays, so you are expected to argue in writing rather than just recall. It pairs naturally with Turkish political history and identity-politics courses, and it is where abstract citizenship theory stops being abstract.
