Computer networking is fundamentally about how independent machines coordinate to move data reliably across unreliable physical links, and CS 421 walks you down the protocol stack from the apps you already use (HTTP, DNS, SMTP) through TCP's congestion control, IP routing, and finally Ethernet and the wire itself. Most of the work is three homeworks plus socket-programming projects where you actually build client/server and peer-to-peer code rather than just reading about it. It's the course that turns "the internet is magic" into a concrete mental model, and it's the prerequisite that distributed systems, security, and cloud-oriented electives all assume you've internalized.

In order to be able to take the final exam, the weighted average of average quiz grade (QZG) and Midterm grade (MTG), where both grades are out of 100, should be at least 40, i.e., 0.5xQZG+0.5xMTG>=40; else one will receive FZ.
