CTIS 166 is your hands-on introduction to working inside a Linux environment as a real user and developer rather than a clicker of icons — the goal is fluency at the shell, where files, processes, permissions, and small automation scripts become things you control directly. Expect weekly homework that lives on the command line: navigating the filesystem, chaining utilities with pipes, writing Bash scripts with loops and regex, and managing access with chmod and chown, all assessed through quizzes, a midterm, and a final. As a Year 1 Spring course it sets the operational baseline you'll lean on in later CTIS work, from networking and databases to software development, since most server-side tooling you'll touch later assumes you can already think in a shell.
