CTIS 221 is where you stop thinking in scripts and start thinking in objects, the course rebuilds your mental model of a program as a system of classes that talk to each other through well-defined interfaces, using Java as the vehicle. Expect weekly labs, a term project, and a practical lab final, so most of your time goes into actually writing code: designing class hierarchies, wiring up inheritance and polymorphism, handling files and collections, and eventually putting a GUI on top. It assumes you can already write procedural code from intro programming, and almost everything later in the CTIS track, data structures, database apps, web and mobile development, quietly expects you to be fluent in the habits you pick up here.

In order to qualify to take the final exam, the student should: • get at least 25 percent out of 60 of the assessments except the final exam and lab/lecture performance AND • attend at least 75% of all the lectures Otherwise the student will get FZ.
